Abdul Basit
Abdul Basit was born in a small village called Armant, Egypt, in 1927. He is known as Qari Abdul-Basit ‘Abdus-Samad or simply Abdul Basit—a renowned Qari. Muhammad Rifat’s recitation mesmerized him, and he memorized the Qur’an in all seven styles. At age 14, he led Tarawih prayers at local mosques during Ramadan. He became famous for his recitation of Surah al-Fatihah. He won three world Qirat competitions in the 1970s by setting a unique style that captivated his listeners. Sheikh Abdul-Basit ‘Abdus-Samad was the first president of the Association of Reciters in Egypt. and one of the first huffaz to make commercial recordings of his recitations.
At the age of ten, Sheikh Abdul Basit Abdul Samad had memorized the entire Qur’an and then asked his grandfather and father to teach him the various methods of recitation. Both of them agreed and sent him to the city of Tanta (Lower Egypt) to study Quranic recitation under the tutelage of Sheikh Muhammad Salim. The student was convinced that the journey to Tanta was worth his time, even though it would take several days. This trip would prove important for him in the future.
